Amanda Seales went on camera and told you to read Frederick Douglass’s 1852 speech — so I did. All of it. And what she left out changes everything.
Douglass didn’t end in rejection. He didn’t end in contempt. He said he did not despair of this country. He called the Constitution “a glorious liberty document.” The man who was enslaved, beaten, and had every reason to walk away — ran TOWARDS America and demanded it become what it promised.
Brian Stevenson said it best: the question isn’t do you love America. The question is what does it mean to be a great American?
Your ancestors didn’t say “I don’t give two blanks about this country.” They committed when it wasn’t rational. They contributed when it wasn’t appreciated. They persevered under threat.
That is the Black American tradition. And it deserves better than performative outrage.
